4 NCAA hoops coaches charged with fraud

NEW YORK (AP) Four assistant basketball coaches from Arizona, Auburn, the University of Southern California and Oklahoma State were among those arrested on federal corruption charges Tuesday after they were caught taking thousands of dollars in bribes to steer NBA-destined college stars toward certain sports agents and financial advisers, authorities said.

The coaches were identified in court papers as Chuck Person of Auburn University, Emanuel Richardson of the University of Arizona, Tony Bland of USC and Lamont Evans of Oklahoma State. They are in federal custody and expected to make court appearances later Tuesday.

They were among 10 people charged in Manhattan federal court. Others included managers, financial advisers and James Gatto, the director of global sports marketing at Adidas. The details were to be discussed at a news conference on Tuesday afternoon.

UNC to skip White House over scheduling

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) North Carolina's national championship men's basketball team will not visit the White House because of a scheduling conflict.

Team spokesman Steve Kirschner said Saturday that Hall of Fame coach Roy Williams and the players were willing to go, and the university and White House tried "eight or nine" dates but none worked.

Paradise Jam moved from Virgin Islands

MIAMI (AP) The Paradise Jam basketball tournament will not be played in the U.S. Virgin Islands this year because of damage caused by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria.

The tournament will be played in the U.S., with a new site expected to be announced by Sept. 29.

Ex-Jays PG Watson's sex charge dropped

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) Prosecutors have dropped a first-degree sexual assault charge against former Creighton point guard Maurice Watson after questions arose about the accuser's story.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine announced Friday that his office had dropped the felony charge, filed earlier this year when a 19-year-old woman accused Watson of assaulting her early Feb. 4 at a party in an Omaha home. Watson has denied that allegation.

Huskers fire AD for 'on-field' struggles

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) For the second time in 10 years, Nebraska has ousted an athletic director during a football season that was failing to meet expectations.

The school's top administrators said the Cornhuskers' embarrassing loss to Northern Illinois last weekend wasn't the sole reason for firing of Shawn Eichorst on Thursday. But the loss that dropped the Cornhuskers to 1-2 for the second time in three years under coach Mike Riley certainly was the tipping point.

NCAA punishes Pacific for violations

STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) The men's basketball team at Pacific has been punished by the NCAA for academic and recruiting violations under former coach Ron Verlin.

The NCAA said Wednesday that Verlin failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance when he violated academic misconduct and recruiting rules to get prospects eligible. He also failed to monitor his coaches and violated NCAA ethics rules when he encouraged others to give false information during the investigation.

URI assistant arrested for disturbance

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) Police say a University of Rhode Island assistant basketball coach has been arrested at a concert following a disturbance involving team members.

WPRI-TV reports Tyron Boswell faces misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. The university says Boswell has been placed on administrative leave.
